Nikon D3S Is Out Of This World

A number of Nikon’s D3S cameras  and AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses will go to the “final frontier” when they are taken out to the International Space Station (ISS) to be used for photographic documentation.

Nikon has revealed that NASA has ordered eleven of the high end Digital SLRs to join an existing star fleet of Nikon cameras on board the ISS made up of the D2XS, NIKKOR lenses, and Nikon Speedlights.

Nikon has keen to point out that the cameras will receive no bespoke modifications and that the cameras heading in to the orbit are the exact ones that customers can go buy themselves - currently retailing at around £3700 in the UK.

Since their relationship began in 1971, NASA has captured more than 700,000 images using Nikon equipment carried into space.

Canon Announces Camera Shake Double Whammy Technology

Canon Announces Camera Shake Double Whammy Technology

Canon has announced the development of a new type of SLR lens that will combat two types of camera shake. The new Hybrid Image Stabiliser (IS) interchangeable SLR lens compensates for both angular camera shake and also shift camera shake.

Sudden changes in the angle of a camera cause significant blur in photos taken during standard shooting, whereas blur caused by shift-based shaking, when a camera moves parallel to the subject, is more pronounced in macro and other close-up photography.

Canon’s existing stabiliser technology, which they started developing in the 1980s, is being extended with a new acceleration sensor that determines the amount of shift based shaking, and a new algorithm that combines the output from both stabiliser sensors.

Canon tell us that the new technology will be available in an SLR lens by the end of the year.
